One Person • One Corner • One Sign

Occupying Corners is a high-visability, low-impact way to peacefully get out into your community to raise awareness about the issues and facts that are effecting the daily lives of every American that passes by. By allowing yourself to simply stand on a corner with a sign you become a human face to a concern that involves everyone. Even if someone just silently reads your message in passing—regardless if they share your views or not—you know you’ve made contact. Hand shakes, “Thanks You”s, honking of horns, and in-depth questions: all of these things can happen—one on one—if you just stand there smiling, facing your fellow pedestrians, letting them know you are here for their benefit. No tents required!

To Occupy Corners you don’t have to march or yell or even hold your sign up high. Taking the time to quietly hold your compassion for others to read is an amazing contribution itself.

The Principles of OccupYrCorner

To use saturation marketing and visual advertising tactics used against the common person as a vehicle for growth, communication, and awareness.
To address the non-local, rural, multi-lingual, disabled, infirm, and elderly needs by offering them a means of involvement in their own community: imagine leaving an urban market area to a quiet residential area and seeing two strangers holding signs about
similar topics!
To work in solidarity with the ongoing Occupation and it’s awareness tactics as a supplemental practice in-between marches and as an alternative to rallies if one still has some fire in them after a great demonstration.

To offer a calm, peaceful alternative to active marching and protesting for both protestor and passerby while enabling positive communication
and exchange.
To, in effect, create a friendly, temporary educational “kiosk” about the plight of the everyday American concerning the 1%, the 99%, and the Occupy Movement.
To not become an invasive obstruction, but offer a point of communication by keeping one to a corner, one sign each; four to an intersection at least.

Have a sign at any time and at every corner right in your pocket! Don't let an opportunity to spread some news pass you by. Just download and print out these double-sided signs on a regular sheet of paper or cardstock, go get it laminated at your local copy shop, and fold it along the lines. Fits nicely in a jacket pocket, purse, or bookbag!

Power in Numbers - You can do this anywhere all by yourself, but lining a busy street or commandeering an intersection with friends makes a statement.
Keep In Touch - When in groups on corners, work out an easy way to communicate - hand signals, text message, twitter. Try not to yell.
Get Outta There - If something goes awry, get to the next corner. You’re not here to fight, interfere, or get arrested.
Smile - We’re offering a positive solution to the unaware because we care, expect nothing back.

Be Polite - we are here for them, not they for us; they are busy and important and we must respect their mindset.
Stay Positive - let’s not spread gripes and grievances, that’s what the march is for. People will side more with a smile then a smirk.
Stay Out of the Way - Don’t block people or businesses. You can skillfully get out of the crowds way and get them all to see your sign, just move to the side!
Be Careful - When crossing streets, talking to people that seem upset or intoxicated, security, and police.

What is OccupYrCorner?

Coming home from a rally downtown San Diego, I stood calmly alone on a corner with my Occupy protest sign waiting for the bus. The effect on passerby was totally amazing! It seemed more effective than marching - because they had the chance to take in and digest one message at a time, and not be faced by a crowd of topics. What if we all, individually, took a sign and took a street corner – one per corner, the entire city – would we be taking "advertising" and "saturation" back into our own hands? We wouldn't be collecting illegally, we would be 100s of feet apart each – but blanketing the city. No one would be able to go anywhere downtown without subtly being reminded: We're here to protect your future… we are all the 99%…
